For a little backstory, my family on my mom and dad’s side are both from Northern Africa. My dad immigrated here 20 years ago and my mom immigrated here around 15 years ago. My grandma was born in 1954 but before she was even born her father left. At the time, men were typically the ones that provided money for the household but without a man around, my great grandmother started making quilts to sell so she could provide for her family.        Even after her children grew up and started their own lives, she would still make quilts. My mom says she distinctly remembers making the quilt in the picture above with my great-grandma when she was a girl, meaning it’s probably from the late 1970’s - early 1980’s. It was actually tradition to make three of these quilts and take them to your husband’s family and they are usually passed on to the daughters of the family meaning my sisters and I are the next in line to have it passed down. Although my great-grandma passed away when I was just a baby, I will always remember her hard work and dedication to her kids and I hope to have that same trait.
