My Grandma's Record Collection
My late grandmother had an extensive record collection that she accumulated over her lifetime. Her music taste was eclectic and her albums ranged from hard rock to Mozart. According to my father, music was a large part of his life growing up, since his mother would constantly be playing it. He has fond memories of hearing The Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, and John Denver playing around the house. I was around nine years old when my dad rediscovered this collection. I was not a huge music lover as a kid but growing up, I have learned to adore it. Now, I have my own record player, my own record collection and my grandma’s records are a large part of it. These vinyls are very important to me since my grandmother passed away when I was young so when I listen to this music I feel connected to her. I think that my grandma’s record collection truly sparked my love of music and these sounds are now a huge part of my life and identity. The lesson that I take from my object is that the power of music can span across generations and connect people of all identities. My grandma’s vinyl collection documents a certain musical period in the United States. One thing that I would like people to know about my story is that, although it is personal to me, everyone has stories like mine and it doesn't matter how different someone is to you, we are all connected.
