My Family's Spaghetti

One of many adaptations of the recipe.

My whole Italian family makes spaghetti. My great grandmother taught my grandmother, my great uncle, my great aunt, and so many other people in my family. Those people taught my grandmother and my mother, and the tradition continues as my mom teaches me. Her recipes are made at every family event including the two most important holidays in my family, Christmas, and Easter. Spaghetti is the most anticipated course every year and is very nostalgic for the entire family. Everyone changes the recipe to suit their taste, so my great-grandmother's recipe has evolved over time. My mother likes to fry her meatballs before putting them in the sauce while my uncle puts his meatballs directly in the sauce to cook. One thing that never changes is the sauce, but according to my mom, the recipe for the sauce cannot be shared outside of the family. I have so many memories of my family with this spaghetti, and you can tell how much my family loved my great-grandma. Although I never had the chance to meet her, I feel connected with her because of this shared tradition. I can tell how much she loved our family in the care she put into the recipe and passing it on. I hope to one day learn the recipe by heart, and maybe even make my own spin on it!
