My Family’s Dala Horse’s
My Grandpa has at least four Dala Horses that I know of, and they connect to his side of the family. His parents were both born in Sweden, but he grew up on a farm in Nebraska after his parents migrated to the U.S. The farm had animals, and my Grandpa helped take care of them throughout the seasons. The fresh air and the earthy surroundings helped him know what some of his passions were for later in life. Later in his life, his family had to sell their farm around the 1990's. His mom gave him two Dala Houses from her childhood because their family had to give up some things to be able to move. Then once he met my Grandma, they moved up to Minnesota. Then around 2018 my grandpa went with my grandma to Sweden to find where his mothers family grew up. They were able to find some distant family and while he was there he bought another Dala Horse. For the last Dala Horse, I am not sure where he got it, but it was most likely from his childhood. I also have a Dala Horse at home and I am reminded of my Grandpa's family and of my ancestors. I feel that passed down family objects have much meaning that represents their family story. In fact all passed down objects help us connect with who we came from, and helps us know who we are.
