Mortar and pestle
My object is a mortar and pestle. This object derived from Africa, but is used all over the Carribean. It is made carved with wood, and is used to grind garlic, rosemary, thyme and a bunch of other spices. when you crush it that way you get more flavor out of it as opposed to just chopping it up with the knife. It is used in my household for most special holidays like Thanksgiving, New Years, and whenever my mom decides to cook. My great-grandmother passed this object down to my grandmother, and then she passed it on to my mother so that it could be in every generation to keep the tradition. Knowing that my ancient ancestors might of used this object really connects me to my heritage. This object makes me feel many ways, for one it makes me feel like I'm apart of history, the tool itself has been used for tens of thousands of years. The mortar and pestle also gives me a happy feeling, when I see that it’s being used I know that whoever's using it is getting ready to prepare a meal in which me and everyone else is going to enjoy. This object connects me to my Haitian culture because food is a large part of Haitian culture. We gather as a family and share stories around food. Feeding one’s family is a way of showing love so therefore every time my mom uses the mortar and pestle I know I’m extending my rich Afro-Haitian tradition with my loved ones. when you crush it that way you get more flavor out of it as opposed to just chopping it up with the knife
