This item belongs to my mother, who came to the United States at the age of fifteen. At this young age, she did not bring much, and as brought here to the United States from Mexico in search of new opportunities for her and the family she had been wanting to start. this is one of the few items she brought, and she still uses it to this day when cooking, demonstrating her connection to her culture despite leaving her country twenty-three years ago. Salsa used for meals such as various tacos and other dishes such as sopes are always made in this molcajete and it has not failed this family once in its many years of use. My mother has always enjoyed cooking ever since she as young and loves the process of making dishes for the whole family to enjoy, and because of this, this molcajete is something she holds dearly. This was actually a gift to her from my great grandmother on my fathers side, who despite having her own blood related granddaughters, gave it to my mother because of the respect she had for her and her cooking, and my mother cherishes this item as she saw it as being welcomed into another family that wasn't her own. This item has been in the family since before I was born, and it will continue to be in my family for many years to come as long as we keep in touch to our culture and the cooking behind it.
