I come from an immigrant family and though I am not an immigrant myself, I have heard multiple stories and experiences throughout my life. I have tremendous respect for all the people that immigrate here for a better life because they usually end up risking their lives or facing discrimination here in the states. When I brought this topic up to my parents they told me that there was only one item in the house that had been with them since they’ve come here to the states. Oddly enough, this is a common kitchen item for a Mexican household. The item is known as a Molcajete and is used to make homemade salsas or anything similar to that. This specific item is made of basalt but imitations are made of concrete and small volcanic rocks. Ours is a real one and actually has a little pig face on one of the sides, I actually always remember seeing this while going up because I thought it was some type of toy.  This item isn’t only significant because it has been with us for a long time but it also represents an interesting part of our culture and eating habits. The hispanic community is known to like spicier dishes or at least have the option of salsa when eating with their families. Even though the topic here isn’t about salsas, it's the molcajete that helps obtain that and therefore an important part of this. Food overall is something that brings people together and having an item that sticks out as much as the molcajete, you know that you’ll be able to enjoy some of the best dishes.
