My object is a military challenge coin from my cousin. These coins are a tradition from the US Armed forces that symbolize unity, companionship, and success among military personnel. The coins are meant to embody the pride and bravery of the men and women who defended our country.  This specific coin is meant to honor my cousin, Mark jr, who was a staff sergeant for the Psychological Operations unit out of Fort Bragg. He was in a convoy driving young girls to school in Pakistan when his vehicle was hit by an IED. He was killed in action and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This coin connects to my family by showing how much of an important role the military has on both sides of my family. Along with my cousin, my great uncle, and great grandfather on my moms side of the family served, with my great grandfather having been in a ship that was sunk during the battle of Midway. My grandfather on my dads side also was a military police officer. This coin shows what it is to be American by showing the pride for the country and the ability to fight for and protect it. The story connects to broader themes in the US like the fight for freedom, conflict and inclusion.
