August Gossow, my great-great-grandfather, was attempting to pursue a career as a doctor, but he lacked the education to do it. Past Gossow generations came to America in the 1800s looking for opportunities, and many resided in Missouri, as it reminded them of their home, Germany. August started out with an Education in St. Louis, but his father-in-law told him he could get a better education in Berlin. August made it to Berlin in 1895, where he worked on his education for a few years. It was here where he got this door sign with his name on it, which is now residing at my mother’s house. He returned to Missouri a few years later with a full education, becoming a renowned doctor to Saint Charles, Missouri. Next to his job as a doctor, he had a hobby of showing off prized exotic chickens at shows. That name sign means a lot to the Gossow lineage due to how most of my mother’s side of the family is made up of doctors. For example, my grandmother’s father was a medic in WW2, operating in the Pacific theater. This idea of coming to a land of opportunity to physically help others is a great concept to ponder and helps me think about what people might get out of me in whatever I decide to pursue.
