Matzo Ball Soup
For my artifact I chose Matzo Ball Soup. I learned this recipe from my mom, who learned it from my grandma. Matzo Ball soup is a traditional Jewish recipe, commonly eaten at Passover. My family also makes and eats this soup in Winter, like some families make Chicken Noodle Soup or Herbal Soup.
I chose this object because I feel like it's really important to me and my family. Every Winter we eat this soup at least twice and will sometimes make it for Thanksgiving, Christmas or Hanukkah. These flavors play an important role in my life. Every time I eat this soup I remember my Jewish heritage. This recipe connects me to my mother and her parents. My mom migrated to NYC from Vermont after college, intending to pursue her acting career but instead ending up earning her Masters Degree for teaching.
The first time I made Matzah Ball Soup the recipe kind of shocked me, as you make your own broth for the soup. The rest of the recipe made relative sense, and was reasonably simple. When I first made this soup “on my own”- ie. telling my mom what to do- I felt really quite proud that I had finally memorized the steps. This soup is such an important part of my life and I am glad that I got an opportunity to share this food with other people.
