My object is called the Mandarin Court Necklace. Although I’ve never seen the necklaces in person, they are very important to my family. The necklaces are made of pure silver and gold with jade and coral charms or beads. The necklaces are from China and to my knowledge, it has been passed down through generations even before the 1800s. My father told me about the necklaces and how they were passed down in his family to my aunt, uncle, and him. Because these types of necklaces are valuable, my grandmother took them away for safekeeping since she was afraid they would get stolen or lost. The necklaces were connected with important celebrations like Chinese New Year and birthdays but we don’t take them out anymore. These necklaces connect me to my culture because some mandarin necklaces date all the way back to the Qing Dynasty and some others more modern that symbolizes the rankings of the individual by the color on each unique necklace.
