Locket
The Locket
by Mae Bird
My great-great grandma Bertha Shorwitz was very poor and had nothing of value. When my great-great grandpa Milton Wise surprised Bertha with the locket she was so happy she wore it all the time.
Bertha had to move from Russia because Jewish people were getting treated poorly. Around 1914 to 1916 Bertha immigrated to the U.S.A. She passed through Ellis Island then she settled in Brooklyn. I think she is very brave for leaving her country and moving to a new place that she didn’t even know the language. I’m really proud of her for leaving because if it wasn’t for her my mom wouldn’t have met my other mom.
Even in her old age Bertha still cared to keep her family healthy. One time my grandma came over and would not even touch the locket. One day I hope I get to wear it all the time just like my great-great grandma Bertha Shorwitz did.
