La Virgen de Guadalupe

My family members immigrated from Mexico to Chicago and settled in a neighborhood called Little Village where they started their life. They started working hard in order to have a better life. My family’s story begin in 2002, when my parents met in Mexico and after a year they got married and  immigrated to the U.S. I finally was born in 2005. My grandma is the most representative of my cultural identity because she celebrates all of our Mexican traditions and holidays. My object is a La Virgen de Guadalupe (Virgin Mary) necklace that my great-grandfather passed down to my grandfather and then my grandfather passed it down to my dad. This object came from from this little village in Mexico, called Taxco. La Virgen de Guadalupe is supposed to protect my dad and remind him that his father is always with him. The necklace is going to be mine, when I turn 15, just like my grandfather gave it to my dad when he turned 15. This object is important to me because it always gives me good luck on my soccer games (when my dad allows me to wear it sometimes) and because it reminds me about my grandfather. My cultural identity is represented by my great- grandfather and the necklace he has passed down through generations. This necklace represents how hard he worked to buy something of value. He wanted to show our family that by working hard you can achieve your dreams.
