Koulourakia, a classic Greek desert

Koulourakia or as my family likes to call it Koukulikia (kouh-kuh-like-ee-ah), is a traditional Greek dessert, commonly made around Easter time and eaten after Holy Saturday. My Great Grandfather was born in Crete and had to move to Egypt to stay with his Aunt because of a smallpox breakout that killed his brother and sister. His father moved to the U.S.A. and eventually, he moved from Egypt to the US to reunite with his father. In Egypt, he learned how to bake and took that skill with him to the US. He taught his son how to bake (my grandpa) and now every Christmas and some other major holidays he sends us baked goods right from his home in Lodi. For me, this is a very special food that really reminds me of this very story. My Grandpa and I often like to talk about how we came to America and all of the events of his life and his father’s life, overall this is really is special to me.
