Arm Band

This is the Kamat family's solid gold arm band, passed down from my father’s side of the family. It is an heirloom that is passed down to each generation’s oldest daughter-in-law. It originated from my great-grandmother, who received it as a wedding gift. This arm band was custom-created for the Kamat family. The design is inspired by jewelry made in Goa, which was the hometown of my ancestors. By gifting this band to the oldest daughter-in-law, it also symbolizes the beginning of a prosperous married life. The center ruby gemstone represents passion, vitality, and nobility. My mother was given this heirloom on her wedding day in 2006 by my grandmother, who was also the oldest daughter-in-law. When my mother received this, she was bestowed with the honor to make it her legacy and pass it onward with pride, respect, and care. It has been worn by my mother on numerous occasions, such as family celebrations/weddings. This arm band incorporates and honors some of the many Indian ancestral traditions here in the US. It will eventually be passed down to my brother’s wife, who may be of Indian origin or of another ethnic group. By passing this tradition, this heirloom preserves the memories and identity of the Kamat family. It symbolizes continuity and represents tradition, belonging, and love. Wearing this arm band allows for future lineage to carry traditions forward despite the changes in time.
