My grandmother was born on January, 8th 1955. She was brought up in Kingston, Jamaica in a small town called August Town. She grew up in a somewhat poor household which molded her into the person she is today. In 1976 she had her first son, who is my uncle “Gary Townsend” and then after him came her first daughter “Stacy-Ann Jones” who is my aunt, she was born in 1980. A year later she had her second daughter “Shawna Townsend” , who is my second aunt. Two years after that she had my father “Terrence Ingram”. A year later she had my uncle “Kesrick Ingram” , who is her last born-child. In the early 1990’s she made a very hard decision. She decided to immigrate to New York City which meant leaving her kids behind Jamaica. In doing this she had her intentions set to give a better life to her kids so they could have better opportunities. This took a lot of determination and strength because what mom wants to leave their children anywhere. When she arrived her first move was to get a job. She ended up getting a job in Home Health Aid and got a 1 bedroom apartment. I see a lot of strength in my grandmother's story and her determination as a person is truly great. Without her I wouldn't be who I am today and she has done an incredible job as a mom/grandmother.
