Jamaican Family Photos
The object is a collage of photos taken in Kingston, Jamaica. They are relatively small in size, are worn out and framed, and are in color. They are made of thin paper that shows how easily it stains and rips. They were not used particularly, but were kept on shelves to commemorate each moment. These pictures are of my family in Jamaica, years before migrating to the United States. They show moments of my grandmother, mother, aunt, and grandfather, captured in time from long ago. They are very important to my family because they are essentially heirlooms. Not valued for their materialistic price, but rather their emotional and mental worth. I do not remember when I first learned about this object, but I have seen it before. My entire family, immediate or extended, has seen the object at least once when visiting. This object teaches me more about my heritage and cultural background, whenever I look at it. It shows the differences between my life as a modern American, whereas my family grew up in a different country, in a rural area. It could teach others about my family through the differences in the area, years, and how the people looked and acted during that time. This object is important to me because it shows the lengths of my family lineage and how it changed overtime from Jamaica to the United States. It could also teach others about keeping their family traditions and cultures alive, that way they have memories and heirlooms to share for generations.
