Italian Culinary Culture
The Italian culinary culture that has been passed on through generations on both sides of my family plays an integral role in my life, I often dine on traditional Italian dishes including fettuccine alfredo, pasta al pesto, and fried diablo sauce on pasta. My parents and my grandparents make, almost exclusively, some type of pasta dish, usually with tomato sauce. I’ll choose to learn how to prepare these dishes from my father, who is a far superior cook to my mother. My family has dinner at my grandmother’s house, on occasion, and these meals are always associated with Italian culture. We likewise indulge in fish oriented repast on Christmas Eve, a tradition I will continue with my own family. A few years ago, my entire extended family and I went on a trip to Italy to explore our lineage which led to a personal revelation: we prepare food in nearly identical manners at home. I use this authentic representation of traditional Italian cuisine to preserve my cultural identity.
