My Great Grandparents, Johann and Petronella, were immigrants from 2 small villages in western Lithuania (near the border of what used to be Prussia).  My great grandmother came to this country in 1885 at the age of 1 to live with her parents and 9 other siblings. Her family first lived in Pennsylvania in the coal mining district then moved to NJ circa 1890.   My great grandfather, John, arrived in New York in 1904.  Within 2 years, he was married to my great-grandmother.  We are still unsure how they met and believe that the families knew each other back in Lithuania and sort of "arranged" the marriage here in America.  This wedding photo was taken at the Holy Trinity Church in Newark, NJ in May, 1906.  This large wedding party mainly consists of my Great Grandmother and all of her sisters and cousins.  John's family was not present.  His mother and 2 siblings came later on.  Shortly after their marriage, they settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, a city that at the time had a large Lithuanian population.  They lived there until my Great Grandfather's sudden, tragic death in February 1919. He slipped and fell on the ice coming home from work and died the next day. He was only 35. My Great Grandmother moved herself and her 4 children back to NJ shortly after to live near relatives since it was difficult to make ends meet.
