The Lower East Side is an immigrant district; New York is immigrant city. This is it. I see New York as a microcosm of the whole country. What immigration does for New York is it gives it a fantastic diversity. Coming here was for all the right reasons, and being in the Lower East Side was essential for that experience. It’s always the poor people and it’s always the immigrants that are scapegoated. I hate it. There’s so much resistance towards immigration and there are not the nods to what we’ve brought to the country. Economically, if the immediate immigrant force, and that’s how I like to see ourselves, a force to be reckoned with, if we were to retract our work this city would collapse.
