Idol of Ganesha
This idol of Ganesha was given to me by my maternal grandfather, whom I call Aba. My grandfather is an immigrant, originally from Goa, India. My grandfather has been an important figure in my life and is partially responsible for providing the life I have today. Although he finished medical school and residency in India, he came to this country with six dollars in his pocket for a better life for his family (10 brothers and sisters). Because he was a foreign medical graduate, he basically had to start his medical training from scratch. Ganesha is the Hindu deity that represents Dharma’s Benevolent Deity, Remover of Obstacles, Patron of Art and Science, and is Honored as First Among the Celestials. While I am not devoutly religious, I grew up with a passion for Hinduism and learned that there are important teachings on peace, love, strength, and compassion. As the idol represents my culture and belief system, it also represents the passing of my grandfather’s hard work and love for his family to my generation.
