The object that I have chosen is called a hymnal. The hymnal came from my great grandmother on my mother’s paternal side. The hymnal itself is made from sheet music glued to lined paper and placed together in a red New Standard Encyclopedia cover. My mother told me that my grandmother loved to learn about our family’s genealogy and collecting things from our family’s past. My great grandmother was a minister in Southern California and went around planting churches and took her hymnal with her everywhere. Because of his passions and convictions, she raised her son in the church, who met my grandmother at a church camp. They married and raised their children with those convictions and beliefs. My mother served in a ministry where she met my father, got married, and now is raising me and my siblings with the same convictions and beliefs. The object itself doesn’t serve a purpose in my daily life, however, it is a physical reminder of the tenacity and love for God and others that now generations of my family have held. This hymnal is important to me because I wouldn’t have been able to have formed the relationships that I have with people. I met my best friend through the church, and I honestly don’t know where I would be if I wasn’t raised with the love and care that I have now.
