Our home Fogo Cabo Verde

Every family has a story, and ours begins with the hope and determination of my father. Leaving behind his homeland, he embarked on a journey filled with dreams of a better future. In 1980’s  my father left his homeland of Fogo, CaboVerde to migrate to America leaving behind my mother and older siblings. He decided he would first come to the U.S to work and figure out how he would later move his family to this new land. He embarked on this new journey with some of his siblings, so it wasn’t so lonely and difficult to face alone. From his first visit to this country my father saw this land was filled with a promising future for his family. As a teacher and former principle in our mother land he wanted to mainly move to the United States to offer a promising future and education for his children. My parents then decide to officially settle in the U.S in the year 2000, brining all five of their children with them. At first it was difficult to adjust to a new country, with five children they faced many challenges. Language barrier, cultural adjustment, and employment hardships were amongst some of the trails they were faced with. Despite the hardships my father was resilient and courage’s, like always he did all that was necessary to provide for his family. This story of my family’s migration is deeply important to me because it resembles love and sacrifice from my father for his family!
