Guyanese Flag

According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary, a flag is defined as “a piece of cloth or similar material, typically oblong or square, attachable by one edge to a pole or rope and used as a symbol or emblem of a country or institution or as a decoration during public festivities.”. I bought this Guyanese flag at a beauty supply store last year for spirit week at school because students were supposed to bring in a flag that represented their heritage.Although I was born in America, my paternal ancestors were from Guyana. The colors of the Guyanese flag have significance. Red stands for their ability to come together and fight for their independence, yellow is for wealth and hope for a bright future, and green signifies vast and rich forests. The black triangle stands for the country’s perseverance, the white triangle suggests the extensive waterways that are at the disposal of Guyana. Geographically, Guyana is part of South America, but it is considered a piece of the Caribbean. Surprisingly, only 273,000 people in the US that claim Guyanese descent. As a result of this, I don’t get to meet too many Guyanese. Nevertheless, I keep this flag on the wall in my bedroom to help remind me of a part of my heritage of which I am proud.
