Great Grandmother's Coins
My great grandmother has never been rich, with her parents being immigrants and her husband being one himself they were at a bit of a disadvantage. They still both lived long and happy lives nonetheless. With their age rising and their retirement close, they ended up with even worse finances. But somehow that never stopped her from giving me any coins she had. Whenever I came to visit her she had a bag of coins for me. Her hope was for me to pay to get into a good college. The unique part of this story is how old she is. My great grandmother is 98 and still trying her best to support her family and is still completely mentally capable. My pépère was from Canada and barely had money for dinner. His mother would go to the bakery next store and buy the cakes and pastries they were about to throw out for a heavy discount. This was all his family could afford and he still managed to make a great life for himself. Somehow he also very quickly ranked up in the army after being drafted. He wanted no part of that life being such a sweet man, so he left this promising career with a letter of recommendation and his sanity. My grandmother and him were well established in comparison to how they had started but, still rather unfortunate. With their lack of money and health they still made an effort and for that, I am very grateful. With my great grandfather now gone I've been visiting much more and she greets me excitedly with coins every time.
