My grandmother's mother was from Poland, and my grandfather's family is from the Czech Republic. While in America, food kept their culture alive. My grandmother's cookbook includes Polish recipes passed down to her from her mother, and Czech recipes passed down to my grandfather from his parents. This cookbook includes many recipes, including my family's favorites: Holushki, a dish made with noodles and cabbage, and Bobalki, made with bread balls and sauerkraut. This cookbook not only includes great recipes, but it serves as a symbol for my family, showing the two parts of our culture combined into one. On holidays or big family gatherings like Christmas, my family would come together and cook everything in the cookbook. This cookbook not only helps my family feel closer to our culture and keeps our culture alive, but it also helps us feel closer to our grandfather who is no longer with us. My grandmother also enjoys eating this food with us, because it is what she grew up eating. Her mother had a very hard time adjusting to America, which led to the downfall of her mental health. Due to this, my grandmother can only remember a few found memories with her mother, and cooking and eating from the cookbook helps her relive those found memories, however few there are. This cookbook helps keep my culture and memories alive, and will continue to do so for many years as it gets passed down.
