Grandma's Cabinet
When I was growing up, going to see my grandmother was always a highlight of any holiday. Of all the people in the world, her love was the love I could count on most. I always felt good in her presence. In her old house in Lewiston, ID, where we would go every Easter, she had a tall cabinet in which she stored family heirlooms. The vases, plates and cups in the cabinet were her most precious possessions. When, due to the inevitable challenges of old age, she had to move to Western Washington to live with family, her cabinet and its contents came with her, to my house. She would have given me any item I chose as my inheritance, but the actual cabinet was all I wanted. It reminded me of her, of her home, and of the dreams and memories it held. She died in 2021, at age 93, surrounded by her loved ones. By then, we had remodeled our kitchen, and we made a special place for Grandma's cabinet. I think of her whenever I use it, and I have stowed a couple of my own treasures in there, too.
