Gold Coin
My object is a gold coin from Turkey. It was made into a pendant that my mom wears. My great great grandparents melted gold objects into coins like this one, when they were fleeing Turkey because of the Armenian genocide, around 1916.
I chose this coin because it has an important history. Not just to the world, but to my family too. When my dad married into our family, he chained it for my mom. Now, she wears it all the time. My great-great grandparents passed it onto my great grandparents, who then passed it onto my grandma, and then she passed it onto my dad. When he got married to my mom, he gave it to her, and turned it into a beautiful necklace.
A question I have for my great great grandparents is what was it like having to flee their country? This coin/necklace is very important to my family, and we will cherish it forever. It’s a reminder that even when times are tough we haven’t suffered much compared to our ancestors, and I’m incredibly thankful for that.
