German Hymnal
My great-grandmother, Hertha Tode, immigrated to the United States from Bremen with her father, mother and siblings when she was nine years old. She came through Ellis Island in 1913. The family moved to Texas, where they picked cotton. Her mother developed schizophrenia and the family moved to California without their father. Hertha did not learn English until adulthood. This hymnal is in German, and has a date of 1883 inside, so it must have belonged to Hertha's parents first. However, it has an English page inserted into it and also has a business card of a florist from the year my great grandmother was married --1922.
