Garifuna Cooking Essentials-
The name is mortar, mortero or pilon. It is a kitchen object made of wood that the Garifuna people in Honduras use to cook. We pound rice in the mortar and. many other things. It is important because we have a special food called machuca, it is green plantain crushed. We always use a mortero to mash green plantain inside until it is ready to eat. It is the most important object in the cuisine of Garifuna people. My ancestors made mortars for their families. It was a gift that our grandmother left us so that we could mash our plantain.  Every time I see a mortar I remember my grandmother who is no longer with me but I remember her.
