When she was three, my mother and her parents immigrated from Germany with this recipe for Frikadellen, a German hamburger dish.  My grandparents moved to America in hope of a better life for their children but always stayed true to their German side.  My mother recently rather than keep her green card became a citizen of the U.S., giving up her German citizenship, my grandparents furious vowed to keep their citizenships no matter how hard.  To this day whenever my grandparents come over from California my grandmother has to make Frikadellen, sing German songs and eat German pancakes.   Frikadellen ties me to my German heritage as it connects me to my grandparents, German Christmases, and eating all of those special dinners with my mother.
