Friday Night Family Dinner
I chose our tradition of having family dinner at my grandparents' every Friday night. This started back in 2004, around when I was born. At the time, the only people who went there were me, Mom, and my grandparents. Mom found this relaxing, as she got to talk with her parents and had a break from taking care of me. More family members started coming over time, and it became a family event. Currently, 9-13 people come weekly.
This tradition ties in to family birthdays. Whenever someone has a birthday, we have a Friday night dinner to celebrate it. The person having the birthday gets to choose what everyone has for dinner.
This tradition also ties in to my grandfather's heritage. His grandmother, who came from Portugal to America with family in 1921, always loved to feed people. This carried on to his mother, and soon carried down to him. He always cooks for Friday night dinners and enjoys watching people eat his food.
Covid-19 has made some major changes to this tradition. For a while, we stopped the tradition and did Zoom calls instead. Eventually, we started having them in my grandparents' backyard. We had started going inside more during our visits, but now we are being careful again.
This tradition is important to me. Although it can sometimes be chaotic, it's one of my main opportunities to spend time with family. The people I enjoy meeting the most are my cousins, as they are the family members I have always been the closest to. I feel this tradition will continue for years.
