First grips
I still remember the day I got my first pair of grips for gymnastics when I was little. I was about six years old, and my coach had been hinting that it was time for me to start using grips. Up until then, I had been practicing on the bars with just chalk since I was three, and though my hands were toughening up, they were also getting quite raw and blistered from the higher skill levels.
The grips were simple, just a piece of leather with a Velcro strap, but to me, they felt like the biggest accomplishment. I remember the excitement of trying them on for the first time, adjusting the straps, and breaking them in with my teammates. It was a bit awkward at first, and it took some time to get used to the sensation and the extra grip they provided. But soon, they became an extension of my hands, giving me the confidence to try more challenging skills on the bars.
Over the years, those grips became a symbol of my growth and dedication to the sport. Every time I see them, I'm reminded of how far I had come and how much further I progressed. They hold so many memories of countless hours of practice, competitions, and even some falls and failures. But through it all, they represent my dedication from a young age starting as a beginner to progressing to where I am today as a level 10 gymnast.
Even now, when I see a little girl's pair of grips, I am flooded with memories of my gymnastics journey, where I started, and all the lessons I learned along the way. They remind me of the importance of perseverance, hard work, and the joy of achieving something through dedication and effort.
