Engagement Ring
When my great-grandparents emigrated from the Dominican Republic to the United States, they brought nothing with them but love and determination of a better future not only for them but their upcoming generations. My great-grandfather, having little to his name in those hard early years, scrimped and saved until he had enough money to buy my great-grandmother a simple gold band with the tiniest diamond. It was the first, and most cherished, possession they ever acquired in the United States. My great-grandmother handed the ring to my mother a year prior she had passed and directed her to eventually give it to me when she felt it was appropriate. The ring sits on my finger daily because it embodies my family's enduring strength and rich heritage, it’s a reminder that there’s shame in starting over, only growth.
