Known as “The Dragon” to my dad and his brothers, Elanor Pertel Terway was a fierce and independent woman. Elanor was born in Kentucky but raised in Pittsburgh. She then met Tyce, a hardworking and successful TV broadcaster. Shortly after meeting, Elanor and Tyce got married and had four daughters, one of whom is my grandmother. Tyce prioritized his career over his family, and after several years of neglect, he left his family for another woman.  He gave no effort to be in his daughter's lives’s, financially as well as emotionally. Despite Tyce’s absence his parents pushed him to be a part of their life even when he struggled to tell the difference between his two youngest daughters. Throughout these struggles Elanor always put her daughters first. She took on multiple jobs to raise her daughters as well as still being involved in their lives.  Elanor never talked about how mad she was at Tyce, she only talked about the pity she felt for him. How he missed out on “his four beautiful daughters becoming four strong, smart and incredible women.” Elanor had a hard life but she never gave up on her family. She worked ten hour days while still coming home to listen to her daughters describe their day at school over a piece of her signature rum cake. This cake is still a staple in the Peacock households and we are reminded of Elanors story everytime we eat it.
