El Comal
I have been participating in the Teen Thursdays Program and my experience has been great. The object that my family passed down from generation to generation was a Comal or in other words cookware. Basically it’s used to cook or heat food such as tortillas that can be used to eat with other foods. In my family or any other Mexican heritage, a comal is used when you heat it up with the stove or in Mexico you build a fire you put tortillas on it and then they’ll heat up being ready. It is also used for foods like mole, salsa, chicken, beans etc. In Mexico we used a comal that’s shaped as a circle and the fire is built instead of a stove, but in America they are shaped as a rectangle and the fire comes from a stove. We use the comals from here but I prefer the ones from Mexico. The oldest comal we have is in Mexico but it was passed down from my great-great grandma, after that it was my grandma’s. My grandma taught my mom and my mom taught me and my sister. Of course I didn’t really think that I was going to learn about using it but my mom believed that what woman can do, guys can too and so the comal has been passed down from my family.
