DDLJ Movie DVD
My object is a Bollywood DVD of the movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It was made in India in 1995. It was used as a source of entertainment when DVDs were popular, when my parents were growing up. The movie is in Hindi and Shah Rukh Khan, who is one of the most famous actors in the Bollywood industry, is in it. My mom and dad both migrated from Kerala, India to America in 1995 and 2001. I connect the DVD with my Indian culture in general. The DVD represents the tradition of growing up watching nostalgic movies with my family. My parents gave me the DVD for my birthday last year. They introduced me to the world of Bollywood movies when I was younger and this movie was among the first ones they showed me. Watching these movies made me feel more connected to my family and helped me understand my culture. Now, I collect DVDs because these movies are special to me. I keep this DVD on my bookshelf in my room. Bollywood movies reflect our traditions as Indians and it makes my parents feel proud that despite the fact that we live in America, I am growing up with the same cultural experience and values that they grew up with. This object represents my family’s heritage through the way the characters dress, the values they have and the plot line because it shows traditional Indian culture.
