Claddagh Ring
The object I’ve chosen is an Irish Claddagh ring. These rings are a tradition in Ireland, where my great grandfather immigrated from. The Claddagh is a symbol for a perfect relationship, as the two hands represent friendship, the crown represents loyalty and of course the heart represents love. If you wear it on your right hand, the heart facing inward, it means you’re in a relationship. If you’re married, you wear it on your left hand with the heart facing inwards. My mom has a ring of it, the ring given by my dad. It’s always been important to my mom, so growing up I watched her find it in her jewelry box after a few years of not wearing it and how excited she was. She wore it everywhere after that. It also has a direct connection to me as their child. It’s important to me because of its Irish roots. Such as its origination in the fishing village of Claddagh, located in Galway City, Ireland. Having an object like this to connect me to my Irish roots and immigration stories from previous generations is really important to me. I hope that one day I’m able to pass something like this down to my future generations.
