My grandfather on my moms side was born on Capital Hill in the “Little Italy” of D.C. His father, my great grandfather, a marble worker, came to America after WWI, and was from Marsicovetere, Italy. He was one of nine children, and six of the siblings emigrated to various countries around the world-Australia, South Africa, Brazil, and the USA. Only two sisters and one brother remained in Italy with their father, a judge, and mother. My great grandmother, also one of nine children, was born on Capital Hill, for her father had come to America from the same village as my great grandfather in the 1870’s with his wife. Her father was a hotel chef and later owned a restaurant.
My Grandmother of my Moms side was born on a farm in western Ohio, and her ancestors were Dutch, German, and English. Her grandmother, when a young girl, traveled with her family from Taneytown, Maryland to Ohio on the National Trail in a covered wagon. On the journey one of her brothers became ill, died and was buried along the trail.
The reason I chose a Cannoli as my object is because it represents the Italian culture in my life. Each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas we would have fresh cannoli’s. My grandfather would go to the “Little Italy” in Baltimore and get cannoli’s from the Italian bakery. When I was young I didn’t know what these foreign looking deserts were that had ricotta cheese in them, but once I tried it I loved it and every year since I have them with my family on the Holidays
