My Father always drank Campari. straight. no ice.  
He is the descendant of Italians who came to America through Ellis Island, illiterate and poor. 
We as a family ended up living in Europe where I too developed a taste for the bitter Campari. 
Now when I drink it I am reminded of my own and my families moves between Europe and America.
