My family never put a lot of emphasis on our Irish-Danish culture. Many of my friendstook their ethnic culture very seriously, whereas I felt disconnected from this concept. However,in middle school, I found a community larger and more diverse than I could ever have imagined:the theatre community. It’s a community that is simultaneously 20 minutes from my door andspans the globe. Theatre was my gateway to learning about different cultures. From the Latinxpopulation of Washington Heights to the everyday lives of children with autism, the theatre hasbrought a culture of empathy into my life. This object is a ticket stub from the first show I wasever a part of: “Bye Bye Birdie” at my middle school.
