Burek
Burek is very special in my culture and in my family. Burek is more than just food, it is something that brings us together. My mom makes it often, especially when we have guests. Every time she makes it, I help her in the kitchen. I roll out the dough, help with the filling, and she tells me more about my culture.
When we make burek, we talk and laugh a lot. She tells me stories about how it’s always been a traditional gift of food. It makes me feel proud to be Albanian and to be part of something that has been in our family for generations. Sometimes, my younger siblings come in and try helping too, and it turns into a fun family activity. Even if the kitchen gets messy, it’s always worth it in the end.
The smell of making burek fills our house, and it reminds me of home in Albania and how me and my cousins would enjoy eating burek. We usually make it with meat, cheese, or spinach, but sometimes we try new fillings just for fun. When it’s ready, we all sit down together and enjoy it while talking no matter who it’s with. To me, burek is not just food, it’s a cultural tradition, a memory, and a way to stay connected to our roots. Helping my mom make it is one of my favorite things, and I’ll always remember it. It’s something I hope to teach my kids one day too.
