Black Dress
This is a black dress my mother got from her sister back in Cobán, Guatemala. Now living in the US, it is one of the few things my mother has from Guatemala, as well as from her side of the family. For the longest time since she's arrived to the US, she was unable to visit most of her family members back in Guatemala who couldn't leave the country. If she did so, she would be unable to return to the US again. Among her family, her aforementioned sister passed away recently before ever getting the chance to see each other one last time. To me then, the black dress acts as a reminder of what my mother had to lose in order to provide a better life for me in the US. It has ultimately made me commend her efforts immigrating to the US and evermore grateful for her willingness to do so for my sake.
