An artifact that is important to me is my great grand mother’s biscuit and gravy recipe. The recipe is made from old printed paper that is at least a few decades old, filled with handwritten notes from my mom. It is used to make biscuits and gravy that taste the best. My great grandmother on my mom’s side, whom we call MeeMee, is the one who originally made it from other recipes she found. She combined them together until she made what she liked and one day, she made my mom sit down and watch her make it and write it down to create the recipe to keep in our family for generations to come. I usually relate this recipe to Christmas because we will always have it on Christmas morning after we open presents. It reminds me of so many Christmas mornings that biscuits and gravy would be made and ready, the delicious smell wafting into the living room. But my sister and I still wait in hunger for my grandparents who are running late again. Cooking may run in my family and biscuits and gravy are a special tradition, but it skipped over my grandma and went right to my mom. My grandma still loves the recipe though and wouldn’t miss having biscuits and gravy for anything. Even if it just takes her a while to get there.
