Birthday Cards

Over the years of my life, I have received cards for different occasions, each with a handwritten note wishing me a happy birthday, happy holidays or even congratulations. These cards have meaning behind them; family has gone out and purchased them thinking of me. My mom told me once, “I wish I had kept all the cards I’ve ever gotten.” Her statement got me thinking that this is something I should start doing, so I did. Luckily I was pretty young when I started doing this so I have many memories to look back on. I have cards dating back to my fifth birthday, birthday cards for all my teenage years and it is very special to read these for milestones that I had in my younger years. I still have a card from my great grandfather, who passed in 2019, with a knock knock joke and a “Love Grandaddy.” I will never forget how much he loved those jokes. I have cards for my teenage birthdays with so much encouragement and explanations that I can be anyone or anything I want to be. I read back on these when I have rough days or when I’m feeling down, and they really do uplift me. These cards give me so much to remember about family and milestones in my own life. It is almost like a time capsule to look back to. Although it may just be a silly birthday card that sings a song, I will always remember who wrote it and who they were as a person.
