My object is a dish my mother makes, called Beef Bulgogi. Bulgogi is a Korean word (불고기) that translates to “fire meat,” because it is almost always cooked over a fire, or pan-fried. It’s beef in a marinade and traditionally served with green onions and rice. My mother makes it with a marinade recipe passed down from my great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother. It’s very special to me because I grew up eating it, and it has such a long history in my family. My great-grandmother made it for my grandmother who was born and raised in South Korea, who learned to make it, then eventually made it for my mom and taught her how to make it. My mom rarely makes it, but whenever she does, it always reminds me of my grandmother and my mom’s side of the family. It is a delicious dish, and I always enjoy eating it.
