Basketball
In the Westbrook family, backyard basketball is more than just a game, it's a tradition. It started with my grandmother, who put up a hoop in her backyard in 1997. It was a simple setup. A basketball goal mounted in the ground with some cement to keep in place. No concrete to dribble on, just grass. After sometime the grass just stopped growing from all the dribbling from the basketball. Over the years, that court became a place where family memories were made. My cousins and I spent countless afternoons out there, perfecting our last second shot, competing against each other, and intimidating each other in one on one matchups.
As a kid, I gravitated to the game, learning dribble moves and listening to stories of legendary games to 21 with neighborhood kids. We’d play in every season, rain or shine, with my neighbors, uncles, and cousins all taking turns. Our games were intense. We would trash talk, high-fives, and sometimes do the MJ shove to get an open shot. If you ever called foul on a shot you were called soft. If you made a tough shot you’d yell KOBE!
Now that I have four kids of my own, I envision future family gatherings where my kids, nieces, and nephews are out there dribbling in the backyard, continuing our tradition. For me, that backyard isn’t just a place to play, it's where the love for the game started. Someday, I hope my kids will feel the same pride and joy I do, carrying on the legacy of backyard hoops
