This baseball bat is my great-grandfather's from when he was the coach of a children’s baseball team. His name was Charles Dewey Hooker, and he was in World War 2. During the war, he served as a prison guard in Georgia with German prisoners and would send letters to Germany. He and the German prisoners talked like normal people, and over time he realized that they really were just normal people. As they spent more time together, Mr. Hooker learned that the Germans had been told false things about Americans, and Americans had been told false things about Germans. This wartime propaganda made the Germans and Americans think the other was hostile, and they disliked each other even though the everyday German was similar to us. This made Mr. Hooker want to raise and teach boys to be truthful and good men, so he started the baseball team despite not being very athletic. This story is a good example of my family; like my great-grandfather, most of my family are very kind-hearted and considerate, especially my grandma, and I hope to keep that trait throughout my life.
