African Mask
My object is called an African mask. It’s made from thick wood, has cool traditional patterns on it made of paint. It’s a piece of art that can be hung from the wall, or just used as a mask. The mask came from South Africa, in Capetown. My mother was visiting her sister who was living in South Africa in 1996 at the time and she wanted to buy a souvenir so that she could remember the trip. It’s important to us because we feel that the African tradition is part our history. We use it as a memorial to my mother's vacation to South Africa years ago. As an African-American we have a connection to the continent of Africa, mostly South Africa, and it's important to our family because our ancestors were African and the mask serves as a reminder of our rich and important history.
