Ackee and salt fish is a traditional Jamaican dish made with cooked ackee fruit, salt fish, and an array of seasonings. My grandmother, who migrated to the United States for economic opportunity in 1946, has cooked this dish for our family every Sunday before church. Being an immigrant from Jamaica, food is one of the things that helps her keep her connection with her native country. She usually serves the dish with avocado (which she calls pear) and fried dumpling. Every Sunday, at Grandmas house, before Church, we sit down and have our ackee and salt fish while discussing American politics. This dish is a representation of a small part of my families cultural heritage.
